All you need to know about Marble Grinding
The main methods used for grinding the marble are polishing compounds and diamond abrasive discs. These methods will remove scratches that occur over time in the marble and restore its original shine and polish.
If you find that your marble has uneven tiles, deep cracks or holes, hairline fractures then you should consult a professional to examine the marble before diving into one of the mentioned practices.
Given below are some tips that you should follow so that your marble appears like new again.
1. Basic step is to clean the surface of the marble thoroughly.
Before using sanding or grinding on the marble surface, make sure to clean it properly. If any dirt or residue is there on the marble while you are polishing it then it can damage it further. If this happens, then you will have to clean and grind or sand it again.
Never use cleaner labeled as “stripper” for your marble surface. These types of cleaner can degrade your marble during the grinding process and you will lose more stone than you intend to. Use the marble cleaner and sealer for this step.
2. Remove any slippage present
The joint of the grout line and the tiles are generally not leveled even though it may look like it. When you run your hand over this grout line you will notice a pretty defined dip somewhere. Sometimes this can be extremely uneven with a tile being millimeters higher than the adjacent line. This gap is known as Lippage.
It is important to remove any Lippage if you are going to grind your marble. Make sure that the floor is completely even and flat at the grout lines.
3. Repair all the cracks
Fill any small cracks before you start with the sand or grind process on your marble. Grinding the cracks is bound to cause some damage around the edges to the chip which can create holes and you will have to repair more things. Besides, if you polish the grit or the marble dust it will fill the crack and redistribute it over the surface during the next step which is diamond polishing.
4. Diamond polishing of the marble
Once you have completed all the above steps then you can start with grinding the marble. Diamond grinding is performed to a very fine grade and the process is continued till a fine polish is achieved.
These final grades are supposed to remove any scratches, which are too minute to be visible to the human eye. This will allow the natural crystals on the surface to reflect light more effectively. This task is performed by professionally trained and skilled workers and requires a lot of patience and expertise.
Last say…
If you want to remove the scratches and chips from the marble and want to restore its luster then marble grinding is the best solution. Make sure you follow all the steps and examine the finish of every step before moving forward.
