6 Steps To Properly Install Bi-Fold Doors

Interior bifold french doors with glass are the ideal solution for doorways and wardrobes that are positioned in a way that makes traditional outwards opening doors impractical; usually, this means that something is making a blockage in the part of the doorway.

Bi-fold doors are practical and they look fantastic, and what’s more, they are deceptively simple to install. Below is a step-by-step guide for installing bi-fold doors in your home.

The tools required

  • Handsaw

  • Hacksaw

  • Drill

  • Set Square

  • Drill Bits

  • Bit Extender

  • Plumb Bob

  • Doors

  • Tracks

  • Door Pulls

  • Screws

Instructions to be followed

  1. Mark and mount the hinges – Make sure your interior bifold french doors with glass have been painted or varnished before installation and then label them with both the order they'll be installed and which sides will face out. Next, mark 7 inches from the top bottom and 11 inches from the bottom of the jamb side door (the side of the door that will be tightly secured), and then put the other mark at the equidistant point between the two. Align the hinge's lower half, drill some guide holes through the holes in the hinge and screw on the hinge plate itself, and repeat the same with the top and middle hinges.

  2. Attach the track hardware and track – Take your track hardware and fasten the pivot plates on the tops and bottoms of the jamb side doors. Then fasten the locking arms on just the top sides of the inner doors. There should be a guidebook that comes with the hardware, which should give you specific placements, dimensions, etc and so be sure to study them.

  1. Get the floor brackets into position – Place the floor bracket next to the door jamb using the measurements supplied by the kit’s manufacturers. Hang your plumb bob from the centre of the track in the bracket and ensure that the doors fit comfortably when installed.

  1. Hang the doors – Bring your interior bifold french doors with glass over to the track and lift the jamb side into the pin of the top pivot plate, pushing the level on the socket to hold it in place. Slot the track hanger pin into the locking arm of the interior bifold french doors with glass and twist the arm to lock it. Next, close the doors and swing them forward to catch the floor bracket in the bottom pivot pin.

  1. Alignment – Swing the doors into place and ensure the floor bracket is aligned with the marks. Screw down the bracket using your tool if you can't reach it properly. Hang the other set of doors and close them, adjusting them both until they feel correct. Tighten the pivot sockets by using a wrench.

  1. Aligners and door pull – The final step is to mount the door pulls and door aligners. Start by mounting the aligners 6 inches up from the floor between the two inner doors. The aligners should catch when the doors get closed. Finally, calculate around 36 inches from the floor on each inner door and make a guide mark for your door pulls. Next, drill a hole through each mark and screw in your door pulls and you're good to go!
